Exploring the Uses And Applications of a Fluid Bed Dryer

A fluidized bed dryer is an effective drying technology that may be used for powder drying, mixing, and agglomeration. This is effectively used in chemical, pharmaceutical, dyestuff, foodstuff, dairy, and several other process industries. Fluid bed dryers are frequently used with spray dryers and granulation systems to efficiently dry, mix, granulate, finish, and chill powdered items. These are frequently favored over rotary dryers for drying and chilling a wide variety of polymer materials that require precise control of residence time and temperature for optimal processing.

Uses And Applications of Fluid Bed Dryer

Fluid bed dryers are most commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry. Apart from that, spray granulation uses fluidized bed dryers to convert a water-containing paste, solution, suspension, or melt into granules without risk of product contamination or dust pollution. Moreover, dryers also aid in agglomeration, the process of combining material particles into cohesive units such as pellets or granules, as this process makes it easier to transport tiny powders due to their loose packaging. This distribution and transportation method simplifies logistics.

Furthermore, fluidized bed dryers are used when a tangential roto granulator coats a powder layer on mini-tablets and capsules. The polymer covering allows patients to consume pills and capsules without difficulty. Pellets used for OSD stacking are dried concurrently in a fluid bed dryer. The applied layers are frequently significantly thicker, needing careful regulation of the powder density.

Various Types Of Fluid Bed Dryer

There are mainly two types of fluidized bed dryers. These are:

Horizontal fluid bed dryer (continuous type)

This form of fluidized bed Dryer is also known as the Continuous type of Fluidized-Bed Dryer since the drying process is ongoing in this dryer. This dryer is made out of a movable bed that is filled with trays that contain the material to be dried. The trays' bases are perforated, allowing hot air to pass through readily. These trays travel through several chambers on a planet. Each chamber has a bottom air input and a top air outlet. All of the outlets in the pipe that exhausts the air are open. Each compartment receives an air supply, however, the temperature of the entering hot air gradually rises in each room.

Vertical fluid bed dryer (batch type)

As the name implies, an entire batch of product is dried here. The air stream in this dryer is introduced by a fan located in the upper half of the equipment. This air is heated in an air heater before passing through the material in the drying chambers. At the bottom, there is a wire mesh support. A bag collector fitter is installed at the top of the chamber to lift all of the material and allow only air to pass through.

Conclusion

Fluidized bed dryers are an economical option for drying materials gently and uniformly. They provide consistent and efficient drying, allowing the manufacturing of high-quality materials with controlled moisture content. That is why, these are widely used for multiple applications in various sectors especially in pharmaceuticals.
